À Bourré, petit village troglodytique situé en Touraine au cœur des Châteaux de la Loire, se trouve la Cave des Roches. À 50 m sous terre, c’est de cette ancienne carrière de tuffeau qu’a été extrait la pierre qui a servi à bâtir les joyaux de la Renaissance : Chambord, Cheverny et Chenonceaux, entre autres. Cette pierre offre l’originalité unique de durcir et blanchir à l’air.
Aujourd’hui, la Carrière de Tuffeau vous replonge dans cet univers étrange et secret des perriers et tailleurs de pierres d’autrefois ; métier oublié d’une vie de labeur en souterrain mystérieuse et captivante.
Près de 1500 m2 de fresques sculptées dans la masse en bas et hauts reliefs, une ville souterraine est née pour témoigner de manière inaltérable de l’esprit du village au 19ème siècle, d’un épisode de notre ruralité perdue, un témoignage pour nos générations futures.
La visite de la Carrière de Tuffeau et de la Ville Souterraine dure 1 heure environ. La visite se fait en duo avec la Cave Champignonnière. A l’issue de la visite, la boutique vous accueillera pour vous faire découvrir sa gamme de produits maison, souvenirs et autres spécialités régionales.
The Tufa Quarry and the Underground Town
In Bourré, a small troglodyte village in Touraine in the heart of the Châteaux of the Loire, lies the Cave des Roches. 50 metres underground, it was from this former tufa quarry that the stone was extracted which built the jewels of the Renaissance : Chambord, Cheverny and Chenonceaux, among others. This stone has the unique feature of both hardening and whitening in contact with the air.
Today, the tufa quarry plunges the visitor back into the strange and secret universe of the quarrymen and stonecutters of yesteryear ; the forgotten trades of a hard life working underground, mysterious and captivating.
Near the 1500 m2 of friezes carved into the rock in low and high relief, an underground town has been created as a permanent testimony to the spirit of the 19th century village, a scene of lost rural life, a history for future generations.
A visit to the Tufa Quarry and the Underground Town lasts approximately 1 hour. It can also be combined with a visit to the underground Mushroom Farm. At the end of your visit, there is a shop offering a range of products produced on site, souvenirs and other regional specialities.
